‘Oh, I am stressed!’ this phrase is so commonly heard these days. An inevitable evil, stress causes mess. The clutter and chaos within emanates from trying to pace up with the incessant challenges of life. Whether it is trying to meet family responsibilities or job deadlines, life in the modern day is an interminable race that we try to run without a break. When we talk of stress, it could refer to any form of physical, mental and emotional strain that can cause your body and mind to contradict its natural balance resulting in overreaction to situations. Such distressing conditions can wreck your emotional well-being and cause mood variations, depression, anxiety and behavioral issues. Physiologically, stress might up-shoot digestive problems, cause weight fluctuation, heart disease and a host of undesirable conditions and ailments. The concern around stress and its up-rise across all age groups, including children has become a burning topic of study in the field of physical and mental health care.
While you may not be able to alter environmental conditions causing stress, you can find means to handle them better and retrieve the much deserved peace in your life. Let’s see some of the simplest ways to eliminate stress from within.
Talk to your bestie or loved ones
Yes, it can get as simple as it sounds. Take a break from your taxing schedule and call your friend. Speaking about problems to your loved ones is essential for any healthy lifestyle, especially when you are stressed. Conversation with people close to your heart can be reassuring, and moreover as you speak you may realize how everything falls into perspective. I do this very often as it opens up my mind with options to also deal with the overbearing challenges.
Breathe deep and easy
Of course we breathe to live! But did you know that the technique of deep breathing is associated with fostering inner peace. We mostly shallow breathe without cognizance and this stresses the body and mind. Deep breathing oxygenates the blood in your body, increasing its flow to the brain, thereby de-cluttering your mind too. Several meditation techniques impress upon deep breathing towards attaining a calmer and relaxed mind. Buddhist Monks, over the centuries have deliberated the benefits of breathing. You can easily practice this while at your work desk as well. Sit upright in your chair with your feet flat on the floor, resting hands on the top of your knees. Now, breathe in and out slowly and deeply, concentrating on your lungs as they expand with deep inhalation. Yoga techniques like ‘Anulom Vilom’ reiterate this breathing technique.
Include some exercise into your droning regimen
Now you may say that when it’s difficult to breathe well in this demanding busy life schedule, how one could dedicate time to exercise. Well, if you want that natural feel good booster, then nothing can get close to exercising. Exercise releases good hormones known as endorphin’s in the body that can kick start your mood and help battle the blues. Any form of exercise such as walking, jogging, running, swimming, dancing or practicing yoga has several health benefits and is an effective technique for anxiety relief. Yoga controls the production of stress hormones, known as cortisol in our bodies. Get moving!
This process encourages orienting the hyper mind towards concentrating on one thing at a time by reinstating mental alertness. There are several mindfulness techniques, distinct from each other and fall under the purview of meditation. This concept has become popular as it lets your mind consciously focus on your thoughts and sensations, making you aware so as to reduce worrying about the past or future.
Who says that you need a reason to laugh. Laughter releases endorphin’s to decrease stress levels while improving your mood. Laughter therapy has scientifically proven to be a natural stress buster. Just laugh your heart out and melt away that stress.
Slumber is good
While stress can be a reason to lose sleep, it also is the key factor behind cause of stress. This vicious cycle can cause the brain and the body to fall out of groove. A sound sleep, especially recommended hours of slumber (7-8 hours) can revitalize your mind, body and soul to relieve stress.
A simple trick suggested by psychiatrists, this technique involves visualization. In this technique all you need to do is play your imaginative cards and envision the reason behind your stress. Then gradually imagine its magnitude to be decreasing. If practiced appropriately, stress will vanish with your flying imagination.
One of the reasons we feel stressed more often, lies with our own inability to prioritize tasks. Waking up with the thought that you have too many things to juggle through the day starts building stress in your mind. Penning down your tasks on a note pad can relieve you of the strain of carrying the burden of too many jobs clouding your brain. Pick up to attend to one thing at a time according to its significance.
Experiment something new
Have you tried indulging yourself into an adventurous activity lately? If no, then step out of your old shoes and try your hand at cultivating a new hobby. This way you can add value to your life skill, relish your new accomplishment and divert your stressed mind. Make time for what you like such as watching your favorite rom-com, joining a dance class, reading a bestseller or anything that simply makes you happier. Valuing your self will open channels of communication within and put you in a better position to maturely deal with situations coming your way.
Did you know that getting rid of clutter around your home, work desks or any other place where you love spending most time has a magnificent effect on your mental poise. I do this so much. Just discard things that you don’t need that may have been causing stress. De-cluttering inessentials is like flushing stress out of your nerves. Moreover, you will thank yourself for the newly created organized space.
Though eating healthy is the key to an overall healthy body and mind, I often nibble into some chocolate when stressed out. Believe me it really works. Well, engaging yourself into any activity that you cherish the most can keep all nerve-wracking factors at bay. This indeed is one simplistic trick to deal with your inner stress. While certain levels of stress can have both short and long-term psychological or medical impact that need to be dealt by experts; at conscious levels I feel stress is factored in the mind and be confronted with a strong will to uproot it from our systems. Above all, a grateful attitude towards people and things around you will help you realize and value the goodness around you. While you adorn your mind with a positive crown, the vice of stress and negativity will simply disappear.
