After defeating Pakistan with 4-0, India uplifts the Asia Cup Hockey 2017 trophy with a wonderful 2-1 win against Malaysia in final in Dhaka at the Maulana Bhashani National Hockey Stadium on Sunday. The Indian Hockey team showed a completely different game in the final. They were aggressive in their last game against Pakistan but in final against Malaysian team, they controlled the attacking spirit. Ramandeep Singh scored the first goal for India just after 3 minutes. Team counters attacked and intercepted all possibilities from the opponent team. The speed of Indian forwards troubled the Malaysian team.
Malaysian team got an opportunity with the penalty corner at 13th minute but Alert Indian goalkeeper Suraj Kerkera saved it. Even India failed to take advantage of two penalty corners they received at 19th and 26th minute. Lalit Upadhyay scored the second goal for team India by deflecting home the Gurjant Singh’s cross from left to lead the game with 2-0. With this 2-0 lead in a halftime, the speculations of Indian team winning against Malaysia under Sjoerd Marijne coaching started on social media.
India got a chance to make it 3-0 at the 34th minute, but Kumar Subramaniam, Malaysian custodian denied it by diving. Further team India got chances to extend their score line. In the 40th minute, Lalait hit wide but Ramadeep failed to connect the next minute.
In the fourth quarter, Malaysian team got a chance to pull back the game towards them when Shahril Saabah was able to drive past the Indian keeper due to defensive lapse from Sardar Singh in the 50th minute. This goal by Saabah reduced the margin and made it 2-1 opening hopes for the win for the Malaysian team, but the experienced Indian team players managed to restrict the opponent from scoring another goal and won the final with 2-1. The goal of the match award was given to Lalit Upadhyay and Akashdeep Singh was awarded the Man of the match.
This is the 3rd time when India secured the Asia Cup after a decade. India won the Asia Cup in 2003 at Kuala Lumpur against Pakistan and then in 2007 at Chennai against South Korea. Social media flooded with the messages and wishes from all over the world congratulating Indian Hockey Team. Prime Minister Narendra Modi congratulated the Indian Hockey Team
