Cyber-attacks have been growing at an unprecedented rate worldwide. Sophisticated malicious codes are damaging intellectual property regulations, vandalizing online infrastructure, and jeopardizing privacy and security. Every new hacking incident is setting standards of infiltration into uncharted territories. The buzz of ransom ware hadn’t left the corridors of the internet that a startling hacking incident has left the digital users bamboozled and bewildered. Game of Thrones is one of the world’s most insanely popular and thunderously reacted television series that garners record-breaking viewership every season. It also has the distinction of being the most downloaded TV series from the Internet ever.
The breaking news is that Game of Thrones is the latest victim of Hollywood cyber-attacks. It was first reported by the Entertainment Weekly that the HBO‘s marquee series Game of Thrones’ content script has been acquired by hackers along with 1.5 Terabytes of data from the network. They even have shared this email with reporters:
Hi to all mankind. The greatest leak of cyber space era is happening. What’s its name? Oh, I forget to tell. It’s HBO and Game of Thrones……!!!!!! You are lucky to be the first pioneers to witness and download the leak. Enjoy it & spread the words. Whoever spreads well, we will have an interview with him. “HBO is falling”.
HBO has confirmed reports of the leak. The matter is under investigation by the FBI. The magnitude of this attack is 200 times bigger than that of Sony Corporation in 2014, which led to the stepping down of its CEO after several classified information being put into the public domain.
According to the Hollywood Reporter, a link to the cache of internal documents that can be accessed by the public was posted online, which included private emails of top HBO executives. The hackers who use email addresses in the name of Little Finger and Mr. Smith have now turned into extortionist. They claim to have earned up to $12-$15 mil from companies by blackmailing them. They even claimed that HBO is offering them a bounty of $250,000 to show vulnerabilities in their system. The compromise of corporate and proprietary information has become a major embarrassment for the network. It is said to contain innumerable internal documents of HBO, emails, employee agreements, marketing strategy, etc. Ransom payment has to be done through bit coin and the hunt of this load is nightmarish for HBO employees.
Before HBO could even realize another hack occurred on late night Wednesday, a scandalous group named OurMine sent messages from the office HBO’s twitter and Facebook account quoting that they were testing the security and told the HBO team to contact them to upgrade the security. This blew the minds of HBO as earlier in this week episode six was leaked because of in-house error. Though the episode was up for only a short time HBO is facing huge Cyber-attacks than any network has ever faced.
Final consequences of this high-profile cyber security breach and multi-million dollar ransom involvement are awaited, along with the sensational upcoming episodes of the Game of Thrones.
For latest episodes of game of thrones you can watch in Amazon Prime.
