With a flawless performance against Korean veteran Lee Hyun Il in Denmark Open Super Series Premier, the Indian player from Hyderabad Kidambi Srikanth secured the Super Series Title at Odense with a 21-10 21-5 win on Sunday. The USD 750,000 final of the series turns out to be one-sided game as this young Indian player smashed the game against his 12-year senior opponent.
During the initial period, the game was with almost equal scores and tied with 4-4, but Srikanth gears up and changed it to a lead of 9-5 with his deceptive and powerful smashes. He didn’t give any chance to his opponent to get into the game. Lee got a point due to the return going back to the net but Srikanth deceived him with a brilliant crosscourt net dribble and got a lead of 11-6 against him.
Srikanth’s crosscourt returns and sharp smashes gave him a lead of 14-8 against Lee. Judgmental errors and miscued strokes of Lee gave Srikanth an opportunity to make it 17-8. The shot sent at the net and two long shots from the Korean player gave Srikanth a lead of 20-8.The game was almost on Srikanth’s side. Suddenly two errors from the Indian player gave Lee a chance to make a double-figure score, but he missed the opportunity of coming back to the game by making an error with the return length. Srikanth led it by winning the first game.
With the start of the second game Lee was struggling with stokes and was often finding the net, but Srikanth continued his spectacular performance and quickly get the lead of 11-1 against Lee. Though Lee tried his best after first game his lack of anticipation led Srikanth to his third Super Series Title win. Srikanth finished this game within 25 minutes.
Srikanth is the sixth badminton player to reach 4 Super Series Men’s singles finals and only stand second in winning three Super Series titles in a year, Saina Nehwal being at the top of the list. This was his third Super Series single win; previously he had clinched Australia Open Super Series and Indonesia Super Series Premier this year. He has been rewarded with Rs 36.61 lakh as a prize for his excellent performance at Odense.
The young player has been praised by people from all over the world for his performance in finals. Srikanth will now play in French Open Super Series which is scheduled to start on Tuesday in Paris. Lets hope that he will be able to continue with his world-class performance in French Open Super Series as well.
