Rafael Nadal recently in an interview described his return to the top of rankings as something very special that has happened to him in his decorated career.
The Spaniard was dethroned from the summit in 2014 by Novak Djokovic. Roger Federer’s and Andy Murray’s absence from the Cincinnati has played a huge role in Nadal reaching the summit of the rankings. Nadal admitted that things have changed for him since the last time he was at the top in 2014. He battled a lot of tough times and an endless phase of injuries since then. Nadal who has won 4 tournaments in this year (2017) which includes the French open helped him to reach the top ranking.
He lost the match at quarters in the Roger’s Cup held at Montreal but, it is a firm favorite at the Cincinnati Masters. This will boost his preparations for the final majors of the year which will start from 28th August. Reaching the top of the ranking is arguably the sweetest moment of Nadal’s illustrious career. He documented fitness issues behind him and returned to court in 2017 after missing the entire 2016 last season due to a wrist injury.
He along with Roger made one of the most memorable comebacks in 2017. While he missed out on winning the Australian Open where he lost a hard fought match to his arch rival Federer but, began his clay campaign with a bang and finally ended the clay season by lifting his 15th Grand Slam trophy and ending his 2 years drought at the majors.
Nadal is thrilled to be back at the top of the rankings but, also showed concerns regarding Roger‘s injury and said that he will miss him at the Cincinnati. Only Federer could have denied him the top spot and Andy who is all set to lose 600 points after withdrawing from the tournament means that Rafael will begin his campaign at the US Open as world number 1 ranked male player. After a series of injuries he himself doubted that whether he will ever achieve this ranking but, here he is at the top of the rankings and all eyes are set on the US Open trophy. Meanwhile, Nadal has been forced to skip many events and alter in his training regime for more fitness.
