Finally, all the speculations of an arm wrestle for the world No 1 ranking has finally ended after Nadal’s win South Korean Hyeon Chung at the Paris Masters on Wednesday. After this victory, Nadal is 1550 point ahead of his arch-rival Roger Federer. Federer can now collect a maximum of 1,500 points in London; Nadal is now a proud holder of the number 1 rankings ladder.
Thus, this is the fourth time in this legendary player’s career that he will finish the season as No.1 ranked male player. Sadly for the O2 arena that it won’t be able to witness the repeat of what happened last season when Andy Murray claimed the number 1 spot after beating the then World Number 1 ranked player Novak Djokovic in the finals.
For Nadal, the deal got sealed as soon as he got the better of Hyeon Chung’s challenge who mind played better than what was expected out of this clash. The scoreline of 7-5, 6-3 doesn’t tell the exact story as the promising youngster broke Nadal in his very first serve and gave signals that Nadal will have to sweat it out to dispose of him. Nadal with this victory became the oldest man in the history of ATP rankings to end the year as Number 1 ranked player. At the age of 31, Nadal had the season of his life with 6 titles including 2 Grand Slams. His record thus far is 66wins against 10 losses out of which 4 came against his arch rival Federer whom he is yet to beat in his dream season of his career.
He started the 2017 season as number 9th ranked player and climbed the ladder after winning matches after matches and tournaments after tournaments. The story though could have been different has Federer participated in Parris Masters. He, unfortunately, withdrew at the last moment and the fans will have to wait for the summit clash between two legends of the game till they lock horns in O2. He has dominated against Federer throughout his career and that would be the only thing left for him to fix at the ATP World Tour Finals. With the amount of tennis that he has played this year, it would difficult for him to keep up the same pace in coming years. Therefore, he will have to be smart in choosing the tournaments to make sure that he stays on top in next seasons as well.
