Dr Jonathan Kemp revolutionized the Guitar world by inventing these new types of balance sensitive strings for electric guitars. Usually, there are ton of options regarding the guitar strings. Light gauge, medium gauge, type of materials ranging from bronze, steel, nylon and alloys of metals. But Dr Jonathan Kemp made it into a cake walk. Guitarists loved this new type of strings and they reviewed it highly.
There is really a huge amount of math and physics behind it. The point being, it is very complicated and extremely hard to understand. But the basics lie in the traditional tremolo arm or Vibrato arm techniques. These were developed in early 1990 but they are still used to manage the tension in the string. Kemp took advantage of these already existing techniques and created a new string altogether.
Traditionally the D, A, and E strings are wound, they need more strain to strum but other strings are unwound which means they are easy to strum. Using these new strings, the strain you put on each string is equal which indicates that you don’t have to apply extra force to strum few chords.
Yes. D’Adarrio is a company which made balanced tension strings for different types of guitar. But the cost is a huge issue. Kemp says that these new strings are as cheap as the existing ones. Also, they don’t have to make any major changes to the instrument to install these new electric guitar strings.
Dr Jonathan Kemp also promises that these strings reduce temperature related tuning problems which were not issued in any other guitar strings developed before.
Many guitarists instantly tried out the new strings and reviewed it very highly. They all liked the feel of the strings and how easily they can shift between the notes without applying much pressure on the strings. These new strings are definitely a breakthrough in guitar world. People are loving them and they are ready to buy these rather cheap but highly effective and smooth strings than buying a balanced tension strings.
For guitar hobbyists who don’t want to spend a ton of money this is the best option.
There was a lot of research on this domain of guitar strings for very long time. Researchers from Carnegie Mellon University worked on similar techniques to improve the guitar playing experience. But Dr Jonathan Kemp successfully created the prototype and everyone loved it.
Dr Jonathan Kemp is the Head of the Music Technology at the Music Centre and he also teaches in University of St Andrews, in School of Physics and Astronomy. He has published a paper called “The Physics of Unwound and Wound Strings on Electric Guitar Applied to the Pitch Intervals Produced by Tremolo/Vibrato Arm System” in PLOS One.
