Have you been waiting to tune and groove into some legendary electronic dance music fest this season? Grab your tickets soon as the Sunburn festival 2017 is going to rock stages across Indian cities with jazz, rock and much more to beat the winter blues. A commercial electronic dance and music fest, Sunburn is Asia’s largest music carnival that amalgamates the thrill of entertainment, food and shopping. It had been ranked as one of the Top 10 Festivals in the world by CNN in 2009. The fiesta is typically organized over a few days with multiple stages and artists performing simultaneously. This year Pune will take the centre stage with the event dramatically unfolding over 4 days scheduled from 28 December – 31 December. By far, one of India’s biggest dance and music fests, Sunburn holds much prominence for its cajoling production that magnificently packages staging, visuals, and pyrotechnics providing a sheer spectacular musical experience.
The hip-hop music has played a vital role in the development of the EDM culture since the 1970s with the term EMD as used in the United States since early 1985. The blanket term EDM gained significance in late 2000s with the American music industry’s attempt to rebrand the “rave culture”. Originally perceived as club music, EDM has evolved to include different genres and is today distinguished by musical attributes rather than just popularity. Since 1974, “Billboard” magazine maintained a “dance” chart and in July 1995, “Nervous Records” and “Project X Magazine” hosted the first awards ceremony titled as “Electronic Dance Music Awards”.
In India, the commercialized form of such events made its debut in Goa with the rising admiration for mainstream EDM. Goa, as one of the pioneers, hosted the first International Dance Music Festival in December 2007, which was organized by Nikhil Chinapa. Live DJ’s musical concoctions, art, craft and food stalls enticed music lovers to attend the event held at beaches of Vagator, Arjuna and Arambol. Till 2015, Goa has been the host venue with over 120 popular artists performing and witnessing over 1 lakh audience footfall participating in the exotic event. BITS Pilani Goa Campus was the first college that hosted the Sunburn on campus, and many of the IITs, NITs, and a few AIIMS also witnessed multitude Indian and International artists ring in the Sunburn concerts held across these prestigious campuses.
