Taj Mahal has often been a part of the Seven Wonders of the World. Tourists from across the world consider it as a cultural symbol of India and throng the city of Agra to visit the epitome of elegance, grandeur and history. This fascinating monument was built by Mughal emperor Shah Jahan inspired by his third wife, Mumtaz Mahal. The stupendous minarets, manicured lawns, chiseled marbles, and the architectural marvel can claim to be one of the most unique man-made structures ever created. It tool Taj Mahal 22 years to complete, and resides a working mosque within. This landmark stands tall reminding the country of the effort, determination, and vision it tool for the architects and builders to construct such magnanimous marvel.
It is unfortunate that this Taj Mahal which serves as a cultural representation of Indian civilization is mired in mindless controversies attempting to undermine its splendor. The incumbent Uttar Pradesh government recently stirred a controversy by eliminating the name of Taj Mahal from its tourism brochure. On the top of that BJP leaders have been making sharp comments on the monument, of being a “beautiful graveyard”, “stolen property”, “built by murderers of Hindus”, “blot on Indian culture”, “originally a Shiva temple”, etc. This is just a small part of the charade or as rightly claimed the wider project of political and religious propaganda. This is being done deliberately to denigrate Muslims of India and their contribution in the architectural prowess of the nation.
Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath, lambasted by his critics of being a “Hindu fanatic” was quick to retreat from such deplorable statements and stated that Taj Mahal has been built with the sweat and blood of Indians. Experts have warned that art is subjective, but some interpretations may be dangerous. The narratives used to describe either the monument or associated rulers is nothing but a façade of incompetencies that the government is apparently being criticized for. Some have even lamented that it’s a strategy of Hindu fundamentalists and fringe elements whose sole purpose is to paint every issue with a communal color. Prime Minister Narendra Modi and several other prominent leaders of the ruling party are conspicuously silent on this, raising speculations about the Government’s stance. These irrelevant statements and counterfeited facts will soon come to an end, but the opulence and historical significance of the monument will persist as immortal.
