The most anticipated Bollywood movie of the year, Deepika Padukone’s Padmavati, is facing stiff opposition from Fringe Rajput outfits to agitated political agitation over a few scenes from the movie. With no concrete release date in sight, it is now speculated that the movie will not be released, at all. Despite the fact that Rajputs seem not-so-happy with Deepika Padukone’s portrayal as Rani Padmavati, the real aggression lies in something which is merely a wild guess of the protesters. The protesting troops say that Bhansali’s historic film is distorting the history, big time. Well, only time could tell enough about the movie once it is released.
Here are 4 issues that are primarily taking rounds in the media used in this entire ‘Padmavati issue’:
1. Was Rani Padmavati merely a character in Jayasi’s poem?
Well, it is hard to tell whether the legend of Rani Padmavati did exist in real or not. Despite the ongoing war on the Padmavati movie, historians are still divided into groups of two one who says Padmavati was a reality and second says she is not. Keeping the movie aside, The Padmavati existence is highly questionable in itself.
2. Ala-ud-din khilji was attracted to Rani Padmavati?
Then Sultan of Delhi, the last of Khilji dynasty- Ala-ud-din Khilji is by far the most horrendous emperor of all times. It is believed that Khilji, who attacked Chittor to ransack it, was smitten by the beauty of Rani Padmavati which was famous all across the Indian Continent.
3. Is Karni Sena justified enough to make attacks on Sanjay Leela Bhansali?
It is needless to say that Rajput community has some valid reasons to oppose the release of the movie. But it is not unknown a fact the Karni Sena group has absolutely transcended the permissible limits as for the freedom of expression which is fit for peaceful assembly.
4. Is Sanjay Leela Bhansali doing justice by portraying the history the way he wants?
Well, this where the entire issue lies, Bhansali portraying the history the way it fits this movie. It is not the first time a historic film, such as, Jodha-Akbar, Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj or Baba Saheb Ambedkar, the fact that makes these movies sensitive is the blind devotees who see them as an inspiration who represent greatness and patriotism.
If you take my word on the raging debate on Sanjay Leela Bhansali’s upcoming film, the ones protesting is not really about the content of the movie. For every protest there should be some valid points, as well as a limit to the violence, but with Padmavati and its agitated audience, it is entirely opposite. First, the protesting troops do not even know how the movie is planned, let alone having valid enough points for the aggression. Second, how can there be speculations made in the movie if it is not released, in the first place? Somewhere, this scenario seems to be greatly politically biased than just a historian’s love for the patriot!
If rumors are to be believed, the actual reason behind the protests by the Rajput Karni Sena initially originated due to the clash of egos. The groups are agitated by a comment made by one of the lead actors- Ranveer Singh long before the shooting was started. During an interview, Ranveer Singh was asked whether he will agree to play the Villain in Bhansali’s dream project considering that he has played the romance hero in previous two Bhansali movies alongside Deepika Padukone. To this, Singh Blatantly answered that he wouldn’t mind going a few notched beyond playing the role of a villain if given a chance to share 2 seconds of the screen with his love interest, Padukone.
As history is to be believed, Ala-Ud-Din Khilji and Rani Padmavati never really saw each other even for once, in their lifetime. The interview which Ranveer did agitated the Rajput community as they now believe Bhansali’s film is based on a notch love affair between Padmavati and Khilji. It is, however, absurd to make one big a deal out of the actor’s statement. He could mean much more than what is being concluded from his sentence.
Well, this is merely one side of the story. The other side holds Bhansali’s lack of courtesy to give any clarifications which should be made by him. If once, Bhansali could come forward and address the issue by taking into consideration all the points and not let the representatives speak, he could actually make a difference.
Another counter issue with Bhansali’s innocence is that he projected the movie to various media spokesperson’s without the permission from the CBFC. If he claims his movie to be innocent from all the allegations that are being put on it, he should actually come forward and address the same. Instead of previewing it to the media, he could have shown it to the group which generated the entire stir against the movie, the leaders of Karni Sena.
This issue is extremely sensitive, yes, but both parties should realize that we live in a secular country which grants us freedom of speech and expression. At the same time, one should not forget the limits to this freedom. The audience, on the other hand, should not forget the fact that this entire stir is undoubtedly biased with the upcoming elections. Think deeply before you take a stand, because the movie is not yet released, isn’t it too soon to make allegations? Do not forget to appreciate the art that Bhansali creates.
