It’s a known fact that we are living in the 21st century where technology is the new magic. We always think that 21st century is done with its quota of magnificent discoveries and top-notch inventions, but just as we say it there are tons of advances being made somewhere around the world, isn’t it? Well, it is true to deny it or not. Our quota of great advances had just started to begin when the internet was introduced, and ever since it has been creating a significant existence in all our lives. Something beyond our imagination has been made available to us. Gone are the days when you had to fix appointments with the doctor or go to an eye wear shop to buy glasses and sunnies. Thanks to the Topology eye wear, who have just introduced an augmented reality app which is promised to provide custom-fit glasses which are available to try on virtually from a 3D scan of your face while you sit at home in PJ’s.
We have all faced the misery of them glasses which are exclusively made for asymmetric, perfectly carved face; but unfortunately, not all of us have that perfect face with a pointed nose and chiseled cheeks. However, the Topology app allows you test and try any and every glasses of your choice, irrespective of the fact that you might have broad ears, a wide nose or flat cheeks. The Topology app uses a face scanning software, it might take a few moments for the technology to start it’s scanning process, but it is worth the wait. The app is currently only available on iOS, asks you to stay as still as possible during the scanning process for the most accurate and error-less scanning outcome.
This remarkable app was an outcome of a brilliant idea which popped into the head of the founder Eric Varady–Serial Entrepreneur and founder while he was having a painful time finding glasses that would fit his face in San Francisco. What came to his mind was a fact that many people like him could be struggling with finding their perfect pair of glasses, but at the end of the day still go back home empty-handed. The spree is even more disdainful for those with low-budget as they have narrow choices, hence, fewer chances of finding a pair of sunnies that would fit their face. This is what inspired Varady, ‘why at all do we need to go out when we could do it sitting on our couch?’
Of course, there were options available that lets you shop glasses online, but unlike Topology, none provides you with a service to actually see how a pair of glasses will fit your face, perfect or not. The secret ingredient for the custom fit app is its ear-to-ear face scanning software.
It will begin with a brief video of your face, capture your face from various angles and then puts together all of the images into a 3D image of your face and Viola! You can try as many glasses, how many designs as you wish to and see if it looks chic or not. However, the drawback to this app is the prices of glasses it holds. The lowest price of a basic pair of glasses in Topology app is $495 while it can go up as much as you can imagine. As compared to its counter-competitor Warby Parker has an impressive range of glasses starting from merely $95, only.
To this Varady gives his highly confident reasoning that people would obviously pay a higher price for the convenience of trying on the glasses at home without going out and about.
