Congratulations to Virat Kohli and the whole Indian Cricket team for winning the test series comprehensively in Sri Lanka- a 3-0 whitewash. By this win, India recorded their first three-test sweep in an overseas tour. Virat became the first Indian Captain to win two Test series on Sri Lankan soil. Also, he surpassed MS Dhoni’s record of six overseas test victories with his tally currently at seven. This historic victory has caught the eyes of many legends of the game.
It seems that the former Australian Batsman, “Mr. Cricket” Micheal Hussey has been pretty much impressed with Virat’s captaincy. He even went on to compare Virat’s captaincy with that of his former captain Ricky Ponting by saying that the former’s way leading the side is similar to Ponting, in terms of aggression. He was impressed by Virat’s aggressive on-field attitude, will to win, competitiveness. This compliment is no surprise for a player of Virat’s stature as his ‘Never give-up’ attitude and the winning mentality has drawn praise from many of the former greats. But Virat still has a long way to go as a captain and to emulate the record of Ponting will be no easy. Though both Ponting and Virat share the same style of captaincy Ponting’s record is way ahead of every other captain. By far, he is the best captain of all time. In terms of batting, Virat is almost there: ready to break all the previous records. And at just 28, he has got enough time to break more records and achieve the legendary status. His captaincy will be tested when Team India tours the likes of England, Australia, New Zealand and South Africa. The bouncy and windy conditions over there will provide a stern test for the Batsman, Bowlers and more so to the Captain himself to deliver Positive results.
If Virat can prove his mettle overseas, his stature as a captain will certainly go up. Also Team India has to perform well in the ICC Tournaments under Virat, since his predecessor MS Dhoni has been immensely successful winning almost all the possible ICC Trophies. The same will be expected from Virat when he steps on to the field wearing the Blue jersey in ICC Tournaments. He must also make sure that the additional burden of captaincy does not hinder his batting form by scoring consistently and helping his team post good totals.
Virat’s winning percentage of over 65% in tests indicates that the future is bright. A player like Virat with a strong winning mentality can handle both Batting, Captaincy well, critics say. Only time can tell us whether Hussey’s comparison is relevant or not. Let us hope it is. #KingKohli
